Our customer needed a spike roller for turf seeding but the models available on the market were too course at only 19 spikes per roller. The customer needed 21 spikes, evenly spaced and the gap between the rollers needed to be reduced by 5mm.
The Process:
We arranged for our engineer to draw the part using the 19 spike roller sample as a guide. Using one of our existing Chinese suppliers, we arranged for the roller sample to be cast in C45 steel, not cast iron. C45 (or 1045) steel has excellent wear characteristics suited to the task and cast iron, although cheaper, was deemed too brittle. The roller was to be mounted on 170mm steel pipe so a critical measurement of 171mm was required for the ID. The final ID was achieved by CNC machining.
